Clare's Wreck

I was doing pretty well so my brother Clare asked me to help him buy a dump truck too. He did quite well for a time until he took a job hauling gravel for a contractor in Renton. He was working long hours, often until late at night. The road he was following ran parallel to a railroad track. At a certain point it made a right angle turn and crossed the track. The motor of the truck was noisy, and one night a long freight train was silently backing up with no lights or sound. It caught Clare squarely in the middle. The motor was ripped clear out of the truck and Clare was thrown out with two broken legs, one of them a compound fracture, as well as other injuries. Oddly enough he had a pretty girl riding with him and she was not hurt. Clare was in the Renton Hospital for quite a while. The R.R. acknowledged liability and paid his hospital and doctor bills and settled for 2 or 3 thousand cash, I am not sure exactly how much. The settlement did not compensate him for some trouble he has had all of his life with his leg.

Clare used his payment to buy a soft drink bar. At that time the whole country had voted for prohibition. However when prohibition was repealed, Clare was able to handle beer and wine and became quite successful.
