College
I entered U. of W. in the fall of 1913. Upon leaving high school in the
spring of 1913 I still had a few credits to get. A hard one was U.S.
History. It was a miserable course. I went to the library and got the
book. Soon after that I returned and said I had mislaid the book and would
like to pay for it. I did so with the understanding that if I found it
I could return it and get my money back. I carried it around all summer
and never looked at it. A week before the exam I studied hard and took
the exam at Broadway Hi. I was dubious about the result, so before
college opened I took it again and easily passed. At the same time I
took exams for 3 history credits. These were easy. However I went back
to the Broadway history teacher and asked how my test was.
She said that because I had not carried any of the class work she felt
that the exam should be harder than for students who had attended a
semester of classes. Therefore I had failed, for which she was sorry. I
told her not to worry about it because I had taken the test at the U.
and passed very well. I never like that teacher.
I discovered that I must take 2 years of military training. We had to
purchase our uniforms and caps which cost about $10.00. That was a lot
of money. I learned that by joining a branch of the National Guard
As I mentioned when I started my third year in college Dean Roberts gave
me a job as his library assistant which was simple and interesting. It
paid me $30.00 per month. By sleeping in the laboratory building attic
and eating as I pleased I got along very well and had money to go to a
5¢ or 10¢ show or even take a girl out once in a while. My
brother-in-law's father died about that time and I inherited his long
tail dress suit. It was of the most beautiful material that money could
buy - and since he was a very big man, I had it cut down to fit me and
was as well dressed as any man at
the University Ball. I borrowed Art Goodwin's collapsible silk plug hat
and cut quite a show. I always could get a nice girl, and they dressed
up so beautifully for the ball that I was both proud and happy.
