Notes:

CAMERON, John Hillyard, Canadian statesman, born in Beaucaire, Languedo c, France, 14 April, 1817; died in Toronto, 14 November, 1876. He was a so n of Capt. Angus Cameron, of the 79th Highlanders, was educated at Kilken ny College, Ireland, and at Upper Canada College, Toronto; studied law, an d was admitted to the bar of Upper Canada in 1838, and to that of Lower Canada in 1869. He was first elected to parliament in 1846, and appoint ed solicitor-general, the same year. He became a member of the executive council in 1847, and had a seat in parliament from 1846 ti111876, with t he exception of four years. While in parliament he introduced and carried t he address to the queen, praying for the exemption from the income tax of t he property of colonists in Great Britain, which was granted. He was also instrumental in securing increased postal facilities between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada; carried the address to the queen, requesting the removal ( the disabilities that prevented synodical acti on in the church of England in Canada; and he also prepared and carried through two church synod bills. He published a "Digest of Cases determi ned in the Upper Canada Court" (1840); "Rules of Court relating to Pleading i n the Court of Queen's Bench' and "Reports of Cases determined in the Queen's Bench." He was a bencher of the law society, and treasurer of t hat body; chancellor of the University of Trinity College (from which he ha d received the degree of District of Columbia L.), and a member of the senate of Toronto university. He was a commissioner for revising the statutes of Upper' Canada in 1840, and for consolidating the statutes i r 1856. He married, in 1843, Elizabeth, third daughter of H. J. Boulton, a t one time chief justice of Newfoundland. She died in 1844, and in 1849 h e married Ellen Madeleine de Berrier, second daughter of General Mallett, o f Fayetteville, North Carolina John Hillyard Cameron Alex Rough -1994 John Hillyard Cameron was without a doubt one of the most controversial leaders that the Canadian Orange Order had throughout its history. He w as one of the foremost and influential Canadian Orangemen in the nineteent h century and he led the Association in Canada through some of its most turbulent times. By virtue of his pre-eminence as one of Canada's forem ost criminal lawyers and his influence within the Church of England as well a s his political career, he lent to the Association a stature that it had never before received. He was influential in making Canadian Orangeism socially acceptable and in doing this he removed much of its stigma as simply a lower-class Irish emigrant movement. Although he accomplished these things he was never able to fully unite the membership and throughout his term of office he was to be plagued by opposition from within his own ranks. He was unable to reconcile the hard-Iine Orangeme n with the moderates and politically as many Orangemen opposed him as supported him. Cameron was born in Beaucaire, Languedoc, France, on April 14, 1817, th e son of Angus Cameron, an officer with the 79th Cameron Highlanders. He came to Upper Canada with his parents in 1825 when his father was poste d to the military garrison at Kingston, Ontario. He attended school there and for a short time was a classmate of both John A. Macdonald and Oliv er Mowat. The family then moved to York where Cameron attended Upper Canad a College, from which he graduated with honours. It was at this time that h e was to have his first introduction to Orangemen. During the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion, when William Lyon Mackenzie and his rebel forces were marching down Y6nge Street to attack the city of York, the soldier in command of the defense of the town was James Fitzgibbon, a hero of the W ar of 1812. He sent the young law student, Cameron, who was a captain in t he Queen's Rangers, to ring the bells of Upper Canada College in order to warn the citizens that the town was being attacked. As the majority of t he militia defending the town were Orangemen it would be only natural that Cameron would have noted their role in the defense oj the town. He apprenticed at the law firm of Henry John Boulton, who had been one o f his law professors, was well as being a former Attorney General of Uppe r Canada and he was called to the bar in 1838. He set up a law practice w ith James McGi11 Strachan, the son of John Strachan, the Anglican Bishop of Toronto, and quickly established the fact that he would have a great career in law. In 1840 he was appointed to a committee to revise the Le gal Statutes of Upper Canada, and the other prominent 42 members of the committee included Attorney General W. H. Draper, Judge James Macauley, and Samuel B. Harrison, secretary to Lord Sydenham. Cameron served as a reporter to the Court of Queen's Bench from 1843 -1 846 and in 1847 he was appointed as a Queen's Council. In 1881 J. C. Dent w as to call him "perhaps the ablest criminal lawyer ever known to the Canad ian Bar." He married Elizabeth Boulton, daughter of H(enry) J(ohn), and she died just over a year later in 1844, giving birth to a son, Henry, who w as raised by the Boultons until Cameron remarried. In 1849 he married Elle n Mallett de Bernier with whom he was to have two sons and two daughters. Cameron was a born leader and it was no surprise that he would enter politics. In 1846 he was offered the post of Solicitor General for Uppe r Canada and a seat was found for him in Cornwall. It was at this time th at he came to the attention of a prominent Canadian Orangeman and politici an, John A. Macdonald. It was he who was to introduce Cameron to politics, a nd although he was later to turn against Cameron because he represented a threat to his leadership there was no doubt that Cameron would be a for ce to be reckoned with. William Henry Draper, the Attorney General and leader of the government o f the United Canadas, in a letter to the Governor General regarding the p ost of Solicitor General, spoke of Cameron as a "gentleman of great legal eminence, considerable talent, and irreproachable character". Draper ha d already worked closely with Cameron in 1840 on the revision of law statutes, and would have been a good judge of his ability. Cameron accepted the post of Solicitor General on July 01, 1846.and at the age o f thirty he seemed to have along and successful career in politics ahead o f him. With Draper's retirement from politics in 1847, he offered Cameron the position of Attorney General, which carried with it the leadership o f the Government.
