Behind the lawn were trees and at the northwest corner Mr. Cayley had built a house ("The Home") for his son Frank when he married, and there they lived with the one baby Emma. All the south side of the garden was a shrubbery where the Glascott children played and where occasionally the cow pastured.

Notes:

Senior Co. Court Judge at Vancouver, British Columbia. Lived in Vancouv er. Hugh St. Quentin Cayley, the newsman behind the editorial criticism of Magistrate Jeremiah Travis was by training a lawyer, educated at the University of Toronto and in the legal office of Black, Kerr, Las and Cassels. One of 11 children, he was exposed early in life to the arena o f Canadian law through his father, William Cayley, a lawyer in Upper Cana da and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Canada. Hugh Cayley was also a fearless and straightforward newsman. He cut his teeth in the newspaper business working in New York at the Herald-Tribu ne. When he returned to Canada, Cayley ventured westward and by 1884, was associated with the newly established Calgary Herald. As editor he was instrumental in transforming the young enterprise into a daily newspape r. In 1886, Cayley sold his interests in the Herald and, perhaps to some degree because of the resolve he displayed in contention with Magistrat e Travis, was elected to the Council of the North-West Territories. He remained a member unti11892, briefly served as premier following, which h e retired from politics. Until his death in 1935, Cayley practiced law in Alberta and primarily British Columbia during which time he married and had a son, and spent almost two decades as Senior Judge of the County Court in Vancouver. The Days of My Pilgrimage p.61 "Hugh and Arthur and I had breakfast and "supper" together, at 8:30 am and 6 pm, and many a merry meal we had. Another of my duties was to go occasionally to the wine cellar with Art hur to fill the little demijohns with port and sherry. It was a slow proces s, as the wine ran in a very small stream from the cask, but Arthur always borrowed the storeroom keys in preparation and his pockets were well filled with nuts and raisins and apples of which we freely partook. He w as a very dear boy, so kindly and sweet tempered, a very real Christian. W e had many grave talks together and I was very fond of him. Hugh was at t he university and a clever lad: (He seldom talked to anyone, but spent lon g evenings in study, coming down at 9:30 pm with tousled hair and ink-mar ked coat to get his evening tea - such a contrast to Arthur in his evening cut-away coat and spotless shirt and tie. I remember Arthur instructing m e in the art of sucking cream through a lump of sugar. He was the apple o f his mother's eye; she would have given him anything. I knew a good deal better this time what I needed, and my outfit was comfortable and suitable. It included a fur coat made of buffalo calf, down to my feet and very warmly lined, and also a pair of snow shoes, given me by Hugh Cayley.
