Notes:

William Somerville Boultonaccompanied his mother to England in 1833 and returned in 1834 just after his father's death. He went again in 1847 t o attend Kings College, London, where he studied engineering, for which h e obtained several prizes. He worked in the early days of the Grand Trunk Rwy. on the section running throught the eastern townships, in the neighborhood of Sherbroke, and after having done government work in partnership with Col. Dennis, afterwards Minister of the Interior, he h ad charge of two sections near St. Mary's and built the first house in Ail sa Craig. He married in May 1854 Caroline Howorth Graham, eldest daughter ot Col. James John Graham; she was born July 25, 1832 and died in 1902. In 1858 he went to England where he was awarded the building of the Intercolonial Rwy. He was drowned in the fall of 1858 when the ship on which he was returning from England went on the rocks at Pt. Sable, Nov a Scotia and was lost with all hands. (There was and is a light at Pt. Sable. The lighthouse keeper, on his deathbed many years later, confes sed that he had failed to light the light that night.)

Grandmother and Grandfather Gill left Burton-on-Trent in 1869. They so ld their farm at auction (Burton on Wolds). Grandfather and brother Willia m moved to Canada in 1870 and Grandmother followed with the children a little later.

Notes:

Born 1804 or 1806, he was a graduate of Queens College, Oxford. He was ordained by the Bishop of Exeter to the curacy of Cadbury, Devonshire. H e was also junior master of Blundell's School, Tiverton, Devon (see Lorna Doone) of which a cousin, Dr. Anthony Boulton, was headmaster. There h e made the acquaintance ot Frances Carew, daughter of Capt. Henry Carew, R . N. and granddaughter of Sir Thomas Carew Bart. of Haccombe near Newton Abbot, Devon, whom he married in the autumn of 1829. On July 28, 1829 h e was appointed classical master to the recently founded College of Upper Canada, Toronto, which position he occupied until his death May 31, 183 4.

Notes:

Emigrated to U.S. 1797, thence to Canada around 1800. His name appears o n the census roll for Augusta Township, Grenville County, in 1802. In 18 03 he was created a barrister by act of the Legislature. In 1805 he was appointed Solicitor-General of Upper Canada In 1811 he sailed for England. While on the way his ship was attacked b y the French privateer Minerva, commanded by the Grand Duc de Berg. In th e fighting he was badly wounded and was left at the Dieppe Hospital in France where he recovered and was sent to the fortress of Verdun. He wa s a military prisoner in Verdun from 1811 to 1814, when he was released an d returned to Canada. He continued in politics and became a judge in 1818 . His sons were mostly very active politically. For more than 40 years th ey and their in-laws and cousins dominated the city of Toronto. The unofficial name of this group was "The Boulton Family Compact". "The Privileged Few" says that D'Arcy Boulton had 8 children, but my grandfather had it as 9. His note says the daughters were Susan Small, Harriet Boulton, Edith Nordheimer and Adele Taylor. The family tree th at HGB (11) made in 1940 shows only the 5 sons, D'Arcy Jr., Henry John, George Strange, James and William.
