Notes:

Bill Boulton to HH Re; his grandfather, John Graham Boulton Grandpa Boulton was living in Russell in 1898, and I was told that there had be en a black frost just at harvest time, which destroyed most if not all of t he wheat crop. Everybody was broke, and Grandpa had a store and people tha t owed him money on accounts couldn't pay. He decided to become a mission ary in China (I was told that he was planning to join his sister, Aunt Fann y. But the timetable isn't right -I don't think she was in China yet). He packed up the family, sold everything he could and got on the train for Vancouver, B.C. For reasons unknown to me they missed the boat to China , and needing income to keep eating, they went to Seattle, where Grandpa g ot a job, first as a labourer and later as timekeeper on the new Broadway High School construction job. About 1900 he inherited some money from h is great-aunt Dorothea Carew (see the details in the stories by my Dad) an d bought a 10-acre farm on the Kitsap Peninsula about 7 miles north of Bremerton, near the town of Chico. My Aunt Beth told me that he rented a house in Chico to live in while he was getting the house on the farm ready, and later moved onto the farm. He later became a logging contrac tor as well as being a farmer. I think the boys mostly worked at logging -I know that my Dad said that he had the job of greasing the skids on the skid road. They had a steam donkey engine set up, I don't know where, a nd skidded logs out of the woods with the donkey engine. At least that was part of the operation, they had to skid the logs at least part way with a team of horses. My uncle Art managed the team after a hired skinner fai led the first day he came to work. Uncle Art was always good with horses. H e was only about 14 years old when he took over the team from the professional skinner. Grandpa and Grandma sold the farm and moved into Seattle about 1918. Some of the boys, I think it was probably Carew and Art and Claude, continued logging. I don't know when they quit. My Dad h as told many stories of those times, which I have published on the Web sit e. Re the 1881 Census- In 1881 he lived in Beaconsfield, Manitoba, which i s no longer on the map but was in the south central part of the province.
